Your Microsoft Purview questions answered

Microsoft Purview is rapidly becoming the go-to solution for organisations looking to enhance their data security, governance, and compliance. But what exactly is it, and how can it help your business?

Whether you’re just starting to explore Microsoft Purview or looking for a smooth deployment, in this blog, HANDD’s Lead Solution Architect Sam Malkin answers the most common questions about Microsoft Purview, from its core functionality to deployment best practices and ongoing management.

1. What exactly is Purview?

Purview is the umbrella term given to Microsoft’s 365 data security capabilities allowing customers with the right licensing to discover, classify and protect their information both inside and outside of their Microsoft 365 and Azure estate. Purview has grown from the original Azure Information Protection service to now offer data lineage, insider risk & DLP coverage and can even cover compliance legislation.

2. Why is Purview becoming so popular?

Historically, the Microsoft offerings didn’t give such good coverage in terms of data security with the vendor focused on its operating systems, productivity suites and in more recent times cloud compute capabilities. Meaning these data security capabilities needed to be resolved through deploying point solutions from specialist vendors. With so many businesses now utilising Microsoft or Office 365, much of their data has come to sit within the OneDrive, Teams, SharePoint and Exchange Online platforms. Microsoft have invested heavily in Data Security capabilities to reduce the need for those other vendor solutions and made this easily consumable through their enterprise licensing making Purview very easy to consume and rollout.

3. Could we simply turn Purview on then?

Not quite, Purview itself is made up of many underlying products as well as components of Azure compute, you may well have the licensing available, but it doesn’t just work straight out of the box I’m afraid.

4. What is needed to make Purview work for us?

The requirements to rollout the Purview components for your organisation will vary on the areas of the solution your organisation wishes to use. Perhaps your organisation only wishes to use the data map elements for data discovery. Or the labelling items under the Information Protection platform. All of areas to be enabled need background configurations deployed to function, understanding of how they should behave and writing of the various policy controls to make that happen plus the planning of how to deliver this across the enterprise.

5. Will we need to do anything after it is deployed?

Like all Data Security tools; Purview isn’t just fire and forget. Reporting, event management and analysis will be a continual task as data security events occur, which need investigation and understanding by your SOC or IT team to diagnose risks or run reports against mitigated breaches and the various outcomes.

6. How could we ensure Purview is successful for us?

Everyone has DLP and Data Security tool horror stories, HANDD Business Solutions have seen customers with their fair share. HANDDs 18 years of expertise in all elements of data protection and security mean they’re well placed to help customers avoid them though.
